AP-C: 我印象深刻的是 upsammy 的專輯《Germ in a Population of Buildings》,封面設計由 Jonathan Castro Alejos 和 Tharim Cornelisse 操刀。
J: DJ live streaming
Jesse: As someone active in both visuals and music, which takes precedence for you? How do you view the relationship between the two?
AP-C: For me, visuals and music are complementary, seamlessly shifting between primary and secondary roles depending on the context. They serve as powerful mediums for self-expression beyond words, often giving shape to emotions and thoughts that are difficult to articulate. Not only do they offer subjective storytelling, but they also allow audiences to find resonance and connection.
When shooting, I choose music that aligns with the theme's mood to help the model naturally immerse themselves in the moment. During video editing, the soundtrack plays a pivotal role in enhancing rhythm and creating a sense of immersion, bringing the piece to life in a multidimensional way.
J: Album design often uses visuals to convey sound. Could you share an album design that left a deep impression on you?
AP-C: One album that stands out to me is “Germ in a Population of Buildings” by upsammy, with artwork designed by Jonathan Castro Alejos and Tharim Cornelisse. The music blends IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) with ambient sounds, while the visuals feature surreal, morphing shapes that subtly reveal floral outlines. It feels like an invisible bridge connecting the physical and digital worlds.
The tactile details of the vinyl cover, including embossing and 3D textures, elevate it beyond auditory enjoyment, transforming it into a collectible piece of art that lingers in memory.
J: In your opinion, how are DJs and photographers similar or different?
AP-C: The key difference lies in the creative process: photographers capture fleeting moments of light and shadow, while DJs respond to the energy of the crowd, improvising and reassembling tracks to craft a unique performance.
What they share, however, is that their creations—a photograph or a DJ set—reflect their state of mind and emotions at a given moment. Both serve as time capsules, encapsulating a specific instant or mood that can be revisited later.
J: What are your thoughts on DJ live streaming as a new form of performance?
AP-C: DJ live streaming, enhanced by dynamic visuals, offers a more engaging and sensory experience. The DJ’s movements and presence become part of the performance, enriching the audience's connection to the music.
This format also helps promote electronic music culture by offering newcomers an accessible way to understand the art of DJing and appreciate its diversity. The live aspect, with its unrepeatable authenticity, adds vibrancy to the performance—even small imperfections can inject a sense of realism and spontaneity, making the experience more alive.
J: What are your hopes for Taipei's electronic music scene?
AP-C: This year, Taipei has seen growth beyond its flagship clubs, with more unique offline venues and online platforms emerging to promote local and international DJs. These developments are incredibly exciting. Electronic music culture is vast and layered—it’s not just about parties and entertainment but also holds deep cultural and artistic significance. I hope the community continues to explore and engage with these dimensions, inspiring more people to discover the depth and richness behind the beats.
